About this event

Summary
Special exhibition at Yokohama City Museum of History exploring 'Yokohama Paintings' and their cultural significance.

Details
The exhibition examines artistic expressions born in Yokohama since its port opening, which developed as a gateway for culture, technology, and ideas. Key art forms include oil paintings, watercolors, Yokohama ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), lacquerware, ceramics, and photography. These works were popular domestically and abroad as souvenirs and export art. The display features lesser-known artists alongside Jirokichi Kasagi, a painter gaining renewed attention. It covers the evolution from the late Edo to early Meiji periods, highlighting the Goseda school's influence and the spread of Western techniques to other artists.
