About this event

Summary
Yokohama Museum of Art Collection Exhibition: Women Crossing the Seas

Details
This exhibition showcases the creative journeys of female artists who have made significant contributions on a global scale, exploring their borderless creations and the vibrant life force reflected in their works. The exhibition traces the lives of women who lived resiliently and tenaciously around the world, particularly focusing on those who engaged with foreign cultures since the 20th century.

The Yokohama Museum of Art houses approximately 15,000 works spanning from the late 19th century to the present. This collection exhibition features a special section titled "Women Crossing the Seas," which revisits the lives of three pioneering female artists who were among the first to engage with foreign cultures. It also introduces works by artists who traveled from Europe and the Americas to Asia, including Japan. Their creations reveal a sense of wonder and a fresh perspective on different cultures and environments.

Set against the backdrop of international travel liberalization in 1964 during Japan's rapid economic growth, the exhibition highlights how many artists studied abroad or traveled globally for inspiration. It also notes the remarkable success of female artists at international exhibitions like the Venice Biennale in the latter half of the 20th century.

Highlights include:
  • Enjoy it together with the planned exhibition "Marie Antoinette Style" (until November 23), which focuses on women who achieved success across borders inspired by Marie Antoinette.
  • Enjoy the collection exhibition even without visiting the "Yuko Moriguchi Recompose" exhibition. The collection exhibition is free for elementary school students and younger, and costs one coin for adults. It runs until February 2027.
  • Works that will be exhibited for the first time, including newly acquired pieces carefully selected to align with the theme.
  • Enjoy "masterpieces" at your leisure, featuring works by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Meret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso, Takashi Nara, Yayoi Kusama, and others. A highlight is the unveiling of a Yayoi Kusama work loaned for the first time.
