About this event

Summary
Special exhibition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, exploring the history of Venetian glass through Western paintings and museum masterpieces.

Details
This exhibition traces the history of Venetian glass, an artificial material created approximately 4,000 years ago, as depicted in Western paintings. It offers a fresh perspective on the renowned collection of the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum (formerly Hakone Glass no Mori Museum).

Key features include:

• Historical Context: The exhibition covers approximately 300 years of glass history, from "cristallo" (colorless transparent glass) in the mid-15th century to elaborately decorated vessels in 17th-century Dutch still life paintings.

• Collection Highlights: Approximately 100 examples of Venetian glass are displayed alongside 22 reproduced works of art, providing a three-dimensional perspective on the evolution of glass in European culture.

• Special Anniversary Projects

- Recreated Masterpieces: A modern master, under the supervision of glass art historian Rosa Barovier Mentasti and in cooperation with Davide Fin (master craftsman from Murano, Venice), has recreated five historical pieces. This includes Leonardo da Vinci's imaginary "Vase of Flowers" from his painting "The Virgin and Child with Carnations" (c. 1475), which was technically impossible to create at the time.

- Audio Guide: A free audio guide narrated by "Kyuu Uufutei Raiden" (a popular art history VTuber affiliated with Hololive Production) is available. The guide consists of 10 segments totaling approximately 15 minutes and can be listened to on personal smartphones.

• Exhibition Structure (5 Chapters):

1. Venetian Glass that Captivated Painters: Explores how painters were fascinated by the mysterious nature and transparency of glass.
2. The Golden Age of Venetian Glass (mid-15th century to 16th century): Features paintings from the Renaissance and masterpieces of Venetian glass from the 15th and 16th centuries.
3. Venetian Glass in Still Life Paintings (17th-18th Centuries): Showcases vessels depicted in Dutch still life paintings.
4. Venetian Glass in Celebrations: Presents paintings of Venetian banquets and glass vessels used to enhance the splendor of events.
5. The Decline and Revival of Venetian Glass (19th-20th Centuries): Introduces glass from the 19th century onwards, symbolizing the revival of the Murano industry after the fall of the Venetian Republic.

• Additional Activities (during the exhibition period):

- Flame-working Demonstration: Performed by renowned Italian artisans at the museum shop.
- Special Menu: A 30th-anniversary menu curated by the "Ukai Group" will be served at the cafe-restaurant.

*Note: All paintings featured in this exhibition are reproductions.*
