The festival boasts a history spanning over 300 years and is counted among the three major boat festivals in the Setouchi region. The event includes a parade of lion dances and portable shrines. A maritime procession takes place with approximately a dozen traditional Japanese boats (Washin) carrying offerings to the O-Tabisho Shrine on Naoshima Island. After sunset, lanterns are lit on each boat as they return, creating a scene of fantastical and ethereal beauty.
