• Features statues from Totsuka, Kura, and Tachibana districts
• Displays simple, unadorned styles distinct from capital creations
• Includes lectures, workshops, and gallery talks
• Explores ancient Buddhist culture of Yokohama and Kawasaki
Details
The exhibition presents Buddhist statues from the late Heian period (11th and 12th centuries) preserved in the southern part of the former Musashi Province, corresponding to present-day Yokohama and Kawasaki cities. Archaeological surveys confirm the existence of small temples and halls in these areas, from which several statues have been recovered. The collection includes district temple statues and those from village shrines, exhibiting both elegant *wazukusa* styles and rustic regional traditions. The event offers insights into the unique characteristics and historical background of Buddhist culture in this specific region during the ancient period.
