About this event

Summary
The Takarazushi Festival, Japan's oldest market and the origin of Osaka, is a unique religious ceremony honoring rice gods.

Details
The festival involves harvesting sacred rice stalks from rice fields and offering them to the gods along with other grains. Historically known as "Masu-ichi" (Market of the Measuring Cups), it was the site where merchants sold essential measuring cups. The event remains active today. A stone lantern commemorating a poem by Matsuo Basho about buying a measuring cup and viewing the moon stands in Sumiyoshi Park.
