About this event
SummaryAn exhibition of Shuji Mukai's works from the ICHION CONTEMPORARY collection.
Details
ICHION CONTEMPORARY presents EVANESCENTIA, featuring works by Shuji Mukai. The exhibition explores Mukai's distinctive visual language developed since the 1960s, rooted in the Gutai Art Association. His practice involves covering picture planes, objects, architectural spaces, and his own body with symbols without fixed meaning. This approach dissolves established distinctions and boundaries, inviting viewers to question conventional processes of signification. The exhibition includes objects severed from their established meanings and functions, presented within Tadao Ando-designed architecture. The space seeks to deconstruct the order of the room, allowing works to take on new meanings through relationships with the architecture and viewers. Mukai's work is rooted in postwar Japanese avant-garde art, expanding in response to changing times and social spaces. The title EVANESCENTIA, meaning disappearance, reflects the perspective that meanings and values assigned to things fall away, opening new forms of perception. Past projects include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Louis Vuitton SoHo, and Nakanoshima Museum of Art.
