Details
This exhibition brings together more than fifty works from the Louvre's collection to explore the period when Renaissance ideas matured and reshaped European art. The centrepiece is Leonardo da Vinci's "La Belle Ferronniere," a renowned portrait conveying intelligence and elegance, which is shown in Japan for the first time. With only around 15 authenticated paintings by Da Vinci in existence, this is a significant event. The exhibition highlights the period from the late 15th to the mid-16th century, focusing on how artists refined the study of anatomy, space, emotion, and individuality. Most works date from the late 15th through the late 16th century, focusing less on the origin of the Renaissance style itself, and more on how it spread across Europe after flourishing in Italy. Only 15 paintings are widely accepted as authentic works by Leonardo da Vinci, of which the Louvre holds five. This exhibition marks the first time in 52 years since the "Mona Lisa" was displayed in 1974 that the Louvre Museum's masterpiece, "La Belle Ferronniere," will be presented. Visitors can closely examine the realistic representation pursued by Leonardo da Vinci, including the three-dimensionality created by soft light and shadows, and the detailed depiction of hair and clothing.
