About this event

Experience the Iron Horses of Kii

Highlights
• Rare display of actual horse armor from the Kofun period
• View of the *umakabuto* (horse helmet) discovered at the Ohtani Kofun
• Exhibition of a full set of horse armor, including *umayoroi* (horse breastplate)
• Insight into the historical significance of horses in ancient Japan

During the summer vacation period, visitors can witness a special exhibition featuring the actual horse armor unearthed at the Ohtani Kofun. The *umakabuto*, or horse helmet, is an extremely rare artifact, with only three examples known to exist in Japan. In addition to the helmet, the exhibition will display a complete set of horse armor, including the *umayoroi*, which protects the horse's body.

In the Kofun period, horses were valuable possessions owned exclusively by powerful individuals. A horse clad in full iron armor would have been incredibly impressive, symbolizing status and strength. This exhibition allows visitors to imagine the iron horses galloping through the region of Kii, offering a unique glimpse into the equestrian culture of ancient Japan.
