About this event

Summary
A historical festival recreating the Azuchi-Momoyama period, featuring a memorial for Oda Nobunaga and traditional performances.

Highlights
  • Memorial service for Oda Nobunaga
  • Traditional dance and fan performances
  • Iaido (sword drawing) demonstrations
  • Matchlock gun demonstrations
  • Market and food stalls

Details
The event is based on a legend that the head of Oda Nobunaga, who died at Honno-ji Temple in Kyoto, was buried at the base of a 500-year-old holly tree within the grounds of Nishiyama Honmonji Temple, on the orders of Honinbo Sansan. A headstone has been erected to commemorate this. The festival is held in November when the large ginkgo tree in the temple grounds turns yellow. Activities include a dedication dance, Nobunaga's martial arts performance, and a market with food stalls along the approach to the temple.
