About this event

Winter ascetic ritual at Renko-ji Temple for health and harvest.

Details
Renko-ji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple founded in 1644, hosts an annual winter ritual on January 15th. Monks perform 'suigyo,' an austere practice involving wearing only loincloths and pouring cold water over their heads while chanting 'Rokkon Shoujou' and 'Suigyō Kinmon.' This ritual aims to purify the six senses and pray for good health, safety, and bountiful harvests. Afterward, visiting worshippers drink the remaining water from a large barrel to wish for the well-being of their families.
