About this event

Summary
A majestic ritual to break green bamboo and ward off evil spirits.

Details

The "Go-gan Shinji" (prayer ceremony) originates from a local legend about a giant snake. As the festival approaches, a large rope resembling a serpent is created, and approximately 400 pieces of green bamboo are prepared. On the day of the festival, young men dressed in white rush into the temple grounds and repeatedly strike the green bamboo against stone steps and pavements. Once all the bamboo has been broken, the giant snake made of rope is pulled out from the main hall and thrown off the bridge into the Osei-ji River. It is said that kites made from the broken bamboo fly well, and chopsticks made from it can alleviate toothache.
