Details
This temple, affiliated with the Rinzai sect of the Kencho-ji school, was founded in 1606 by Nene (Kita-no-Mandokoro), the principal wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to commemorate his spirit. The Reihou (mausoleum) hall, adorned with exquisite lacquer work (makie), houses Nene's remains. The temple grounds feature numerous attractions, including the Kodai-ji Garden, important cultural properties such as the Kaizan-do Hall and a tea room, and a scenic bamboo grove path. It is a must-see spot when exploring the Higashiyama district. During special nighttime viewings, the temple is illuminated, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a mystical atmosphere. The Kodai-ji Sho-Hakubutskan (Kodai-ji Small Museum) also displays the Daisui-gyo Bosatsu Statue from the Reihou.
