Details
The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art presents this exhibition to explore the life and work of Kenkichi Tomimoto (1886-1963), an essential figure in modern Japanese ceramics. Born in Ando, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture, Tomimoto began his career in the early Taisho period and was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder in 1955 for his colored porcelain. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 1961. The exhibition showcases approximately 73 works in total, including the 33 donated by Imura Arao, a close friend born in the same village as Tomimoto. These pieces demonstrate Tomimoto's techniques and creative motifs, as well as the exchange between the two artists. The display also includes about 40 works from the museum's own collection and loaned pieces. The event examines the state of crafts in the early Showa era, Tomimoto's relocation to Takayama during wartime, and the post-war establishment of the Important Intangible Cultural Property system, aiming to provide a historical context for his work.
