About this event
SummaryA scenic gorge along the Ohtaki River formed by Mount Nantai's volcanic eruptions, featuring the legendary Kachizo Jizo statues and Kobo Daishi's brushwork.
Highlights
- Turbulent river flow in a small valley
- Approximately 70 Jizo statues known as 'Kachizo' (number varies when counted)
- 'Kanman' Buddhist symbol carved by Kobo Daishi
- Nikko Botanical Garden with seasonal scenery
Details
This unique landscape was created by lava from Mount Nantai. On the southern shore, a group of about 70 Jizo statues stands, called 'Kachizo' because the count changes each time. Upstream on a cliff is the Sanskrit character 'Kanman', inscribed by Kobo Daishi after throwing his brush, known as 'Kobo Daishi's Throwing of the Brush'. Opposite the statues lies the Nikko Botanical Garden, offering views from spring greenery to autumn leaves and snow-covered statues.
