Details
This exhibition showcases three renowned Japanese matcha tea bowls that represent a traditional ranking system used for centuries in the tea ceremony. The phrase 'Ichi-raku, Ni-hagi, San-Karatsu' (One Raku, Two Hagi, Three Karatsu) categorizes these vessels based on their aesthetic qualities and usability.

The featured bowls are:
  • Raku: Known for concentrated beauty that resonates with the heart of Sen no Rikyu. Created in Kyoto during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
  • Hagi: Features a soft, gentle beauty that grows and develops with use. Originates from Yamaguchi, with production beginning in the Keicho era.
  • Karatsu: Characterized by strong, simple beauty that connects everyday life with the tea ceremony. Produced since the 16th century in Saga and Nagasaki.

Visitors are invited to explore the unique characteristics of each bowl and choose their favorite.
